We are happy to announce that our Radically Open DBT Skills Class will begin on Monday, August 19, 2019 at 5:30. As the only team offering RO DBT in the Piedmont Triad, we are excited about making a difference in peoples’ lives with this new treatment modality.
How can you know if RO DBT is right for you?
There are a few ways to look at this question. RO DBT focuses on increasing openness to new experiences and openness to feedback from others, enhancing intimacy and social connectedness, and increasing flexibility to cope with change. If these sound like areas of potential growth for you, then you might benefit from RO DBT. But you will benefit the most if you have an overcontrolled coping style. There are a few helpful ways to think of overcontrol. Overcontrolled individuals have excessive self-control—essentially they suffer from too much of a good thing. Some questions to ask yourself are: Do I follow rules inflexibly? Do I mentally rehearse what I am going to say before entering a social situation? Do I have a strong urge fix things? Is it hard for me to relax and stop being productive? Do I feel OK being silly?
Diagnoses are another way to gauge whether RO DBT can help you. RO DBT went through over twenty years of research and development. During this time, studies have shown it to be effective with treatment-resistant depression, Anorexia Nervosa, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and several personality disorders (Cluster A and C personality disorders: Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal; Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive). If you suffer from any of these conditions, RO DBT might be effective for you.
